Greenzone Movement and Marvel give students a voice on the issue of bullying

Through the ZONED Comic Book Contest – Winning Story Illustrated by Marvel

WATERLOO, Ontario, April 5, 2014 – GREENZONE Movement Inc., is an Ontario based company which focuses on emotional intelligence and conflict avoidance/resolution. Dr. Sohail and his co-therapist Bette Davis, co-authors of Creating Greenzone Schools and The Art of Living in Your Greenzone, noticed that students had no real platform to express their views or solutions to the serious global problem of bullying. In collaboration with Marvel Entertainment, GREENZONE Movement Inc. has created a contest for students and their families to submit a short narrative about the global problem of bullying and Marvel Comics will create a custom comic book based on the winning story submission, featuring the author as a key character. The new custom comic will be released during the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair November 7th-16th, 2014. The contest is open to anyone 13-years-old and over worldwide. Entrants under the age of 13 may enter the contest with the support of a parent, guardian or teacher. In 2013 The GREENZONE Team set up an exhibit at the Royal Winter Fair to introduce the first annual ZONED Comic Contest. A Facebook page was also created to chronicle the launch and has gained a loyal fan base in over 35 countries, with more than 19,650 Likes to date. Weekly total reach has topped 42,300. “I read an article by the Greater Good Science Centre at the University of California, Berkeley that asked a question on the subject of kindness and generosity. ‘Wouldn’t it be great if you could walk into a store and buy lifelong happiness?’” states Susan Jamieson, Vice President of Sales for O2 Aqua, the ZONED Comic Contest’s first sponsor. “The answer to the question made me pause. The idea is not as fanciful as it sounds, as long as whatever you buy is meant for someone else. The point is that when we consider others first, giving what we freely have, our time and energy, one of the paybacks is our own sense of wellbeing.”

The ZONED Comic Contest is asking young people to share their thoughts on how we might help address the issues of bullying, offering solutions for students today and teaching a new generation to gain confidence through the new stories that will be told. With Marvel Entertainment’s support, the educational platform looks to create an environment that reconnects kids with their academic potential and also prepares them to work and serve humanity to the best of their ability.

O2 Aqua’s newly secured territory representation in the UK and Ireland are thrilled to be able to introduce retailers to the ZONED Comic Book Contest Program. Scott Ennis, Head of Operations for Pond Import Export Ltd., says, “I too was bullied as a kid, and also found the experience to be pretty ugly.” The experience of being bullied can end up causing lasting damage to victims. This is both self-evident, and also supported by an increasing body of research. It is not necessary to be physically injured in order to suffer lasting harm. Words and gestures are quite enough. Scott further comments, “It would be great if the average person was possessed of unshakable self-confidence, but this just isn’t how identity works. Identity is a social process. Other people contribute to it.”

Helping to Undo the Damage
If the primary damage that bullying causes is damage to identity and self-esteem, then taking steps to repair identity and self-esteem are in order for people looking to heal from past bullying experiences. What needs to heal, in most cases, is not the physical body, but rather, identity and self-concept. Susan Jamieson added, “Bullied people need to learn how to feel safe again in the world (or safe enough). They need to learn that they are acceptable people who have something to offer other people. They need to feel again that if they set their mind to something that they can hope to accomplish it.”

The ZONED Comic Contest, Marvel Entertainment, and Ice Down Beverages (O2 Aqua) understand that these are not modest goals, but they are the things we need to be working on if any sort of change is possible.

Rehtaeh Parsons will make a special appearance as a comic book character in the ZONED Comic. Glen Canning, Rehtaeh Parsons’ father, commented, “I hope that the students and adults that step forward and associate with the ZONED Comic Contest and share their stories of bullying, do so with the intent of offering comfort and hope to someday put an end to bullying. As long as derogatory comments are being made, they must always be challenged. I personally welcome the opportunity to read the winning story with a view of hearing from a student what their thoughts are on solutions to the problem. The reason I agreed to participate in the ZONED program is because Rehtaeh had thoughts and opinions on how we might address the problems being faced, and I know she would welcome an opportunity for her thoughts to be heard.”
